Halloween Candy Ratings

Following the theme of the festive season, I will be providing a humble review of some popular candy. The candy that will be joyfully (or reluctantly) eaten are: Hershey's chocolate bars, Reese’s cups, Kit Kats, Crunch, M&Ms, Sour Patch Kids, Trolli gummy worms, Dum Dums, Snickers, Milky Way, and Tootsie Rolls.

Hershey's chocolate - A classic, ol’ tried and true-ish. I believe this is a good candy if there’s nothing else around or just in the mood for some chocolate. When you take a bite you get that cheap chocolate taste…and a very dry taste after about three small bars. In all, I think Hershey's chocolate is good but there could be some better options out there. 6.8/10

  1. Reese’s Cups - Oh the lovely combo of chocolate and peanut butter can never be beat. Although the chocolate is basically the same as Hershey's, it is enhanced by the peanut butter filling inside and leaves you with a sweet but fulfilling taste in your mouth (but you will still get that dry mouth and throat unless you drink a considerable amount of water with it). 7/10

  2. Kit Kats - I do enjoy breaking off a piece of a Kit Kat bar or eating it whole. Even though it still is the same chocolate as Hershey's (and the same company if you look at the label near the ingredients) I will never pass up a Kit Kat. They’re sweet and crunchy and can be broken off for friends, unless you ignore the obvious divots in it and just chomp off a piece like few people. There is something about chocolate surrounded wafers that intrigues me, maybe because I love wafers? Anyways, this is a solid candy and gives me satisfaction when I see it in a candy bag. 7.5/10

  3. Crunch - There was an old meme of a 1980s Crunch Bar advertisement a while back - good times those days were. This is a chocolate bar filled with rice puffs to give it some added flair and it works for me. This used to be my favorite candy for a few years and still has a place in my heart for good chocolate bars. As the name implies it is quite crunchy; the chocolate bar is a little bit more tough to bite through than a Hershey but it’s rewarding with the rice puffs popping and melting as you eat it. That’s why I love nestle crunch - just not as much anymore but still a solid 7.6/10.

  4. M&Ms - You might be wondering, John why so much chocolate? Where are the gummies? The hard candies? Lollipops? Don’t worry dear reader we are very close to those, BUT the M&Ms first. You can’t go wrong with M&Ms, the originals are colorful, hard sugar coated pieces of chocolate that have a nice pop to them when you chew. Always a goodie AND you can get multiple different kinds like peanuts, peanut butter, brownie, caramel, and almonds. Very diverse but consistent in quality. 8/10

  5. Sour Patch Kids - Now we have the sour gummies, I don’t know why they made the gummies you eat “kids” but whatever the reason, it’s a good candy. The different flavors add variety to your palate and maybe a little sense of adventure trying new things. It’s sweet and sour which is a very well liked treat and I personally enjoy some here and there. 8/10

  6. Trolli gummy worms - Similar to the sweet and sour trend, Trolli makes gummies but now they’re multicolored/flavored worms (how fun!). I like the colorful, worm-shaped, sour gummies very much. When I’ve been trick or treating Trolli was always a nice rare find in my candy bag so they’ve been somewhat of a luxury or rarity to me. 8.5/10

  7. Dum Dums - I am and forever will be a fan of the Dum Dums lollipop. There are so many flavors like Peach, blue raspberry, cherry, watermelon, butterscotch, and more! My personal favorite is the peach flavor. It’s a yummy treat to have after a mind numbing test to survive the rest of the day. You can treat it like a normal lollipop or just crunch it barbarically (Not too great for the pearly whites though I must admit I do just chew the lollipop sometimes). It’s a classic so 9/10.

  8. Snickers - I am a big fan I must admit. It’s a perfect combination of smooth nougat topped with peanuts, caramel and all of that covered with delicious milk chocolate. That being said, it’s still cheap American chocolate but it’s cheap American chocolate with amazing extra stuff that adds flavor. It has a good texture, sweetness, and nutty taste that is quite nice. I give it a 9.8/10

  9. Milky Way - It got its name from a previous malted drink instead of the galaxy, which is a little disappointing to me. It’s similar to Snickers just without the peanuts. I think I just like candy and sweets in general, but I really enjoy milky ways. They have always been consistent with me and that probably won’t ever change. I love chocolate, caramel, and nougat together. 9.5/10

  10. Tootsie rolls - In my hungry opinion, I saved my least favorite for last. The tootsie roll is not considered chocolate nor taffy. It’s considered the in-between of caramel and taffy that just happens to have a chocolate taste. I personally think it has the texture of a melted car tire with a dash of cocoa and sugar. I see this candy so much in my trick or treat bag that I give a frown when I browse my night’s collection. If you like it, I am happy for you and envious of your strength and taste. 2/10

In sum, most of the candy you’ll see in candy bags around here is what is listed here but I did leave some out like Twix, 3 Musketeers, Warheads, and more. Enjoy your candies, even the Tootsie Rolls if that’s your thing, and have a Happy Halloween.
