Altamont v. Springs: September 3rd in Review
This volleyball game was one of the loudest I’ve experienced which made it all the more exciting to watch. The chants were incredibly fun, specifically the chant that declared, “How high is the net? Too high!” In the game against Altamont on September 3rd, the first two sets were all Altamont. They won both with scores of 25-18 and 25-19 respectively. During the first set, Springs had the lead, but it was slowly chipped away until Altamont caught back up with them. Near the end of the first set, Senior Lauren Allen took a hard fall, and went to the sidelines; the place she would remain until she was carried off the court during the third set.
The second set was incredibly engaging as well, with Springs holding the lead for about half of the set. However, the same thing happened again, Altamont slowly regained control of the game. During the set, one person near me was incredibly outraged at some of the calls that the referees were making, saying, “We ride at dawn.” However, she did later retract her statement when the referee began to make calls that she preferred.
The third set was very close, with a tight back and forth between the two teams as they fought for the lead. The Swamp was screaming very loudly, and some of my peers had difficulty speaking the next day. Near the end of the set, the Swamp was at an incredible volume, as Altamont and Springs were neck and neck in points. Eventually, Springs snatched the set from Altamont with a score of 25-22.
In the beginning of the fourth set, many of the Springs fans did not have much hope. Altamont had the lead with 11-5 at one point, but Springs flipped a switch and began to gain momentum. At the end of this set, the score was incredibly close, having to enact the win by 2 rule, but Altamont snuck away, winning the set 26-24.
All in all, the game was exhilarating, and it was the first Altamont rivalry game that many in the crowd had attended. It was very fun screaming with the rest of the Springs fans, and really feeling the amount of anticipation and excitement in the room. This game makes Springs 1-3, and the next time these teams face each other is on October 2nd at Springs.
