Letter From The Editor August: Receiving the Torch
Salutations Reader!
You would think writing the Letter From the Editor would probably be the easiest thing to write. You would be right. Honestly writing this is like writing a continuous stream of thought but maybe less like James Joyce. Reading through previous letters is actually quite entertaining. There’s no strict format and no agenda editors must address. Some letters are just a list of recommended activities and books to read, some are just one sentence update on how they got the flu, and some are a call to action to voice their concerns through the Woodward Post.
This month as the Editor-In-Chief I’ve discovered there really aren’t any instructions on how to do this thing. You just kinda get it and go. Luckily the title was given to “Aaron ‘The Machine’ Tarrance” (my new nickname from former Editor-In-Chief, Duncan Holditch). Unlike Duncan, I’m not as good at complaining about things but I think I’m pretty good at lending an ear for people who have good things to complain about and from what I hear, there seems to be a lot to complain about on campus.
I’m hoping to really focus on the school and community with the articles we write this year. I also hope to really build up new writers into confident journalists who are fearless when it comes to speaking out against what they think is wrong. So be ready for a lot more Woodward Post meetings and a possible excursion.
The Woodward Post is best when its articles are varied and passion is seen. If you went to a new restaurant recently, why not write about your experience? Would you recommend it? If you saw a new movie go ahead and spoil us. If you’re suffering from Senioritis already, share some tips you’ve been using to power through. There is so much more to the paper than cold, hard news.
The way I want people to approach the Woodward Post this year is the same way former writer Simon Ma (Class of 22) approached it: “he does not write to please anybody. He writes to share his opinion, to spread positivity, and to create impact.” - Simon Ma’s staff bio.
I hope you all enjoyed your first month back. Please don’t be afraid to send in your articles, comics, videos, or audio files to the Woodward Post. I’m sure we’ll find a place for it.
Over and out,
Aaron
P.S. Thank you to my wonderful staff for managing the WWP on campus. Especially Sav Moran and William Vernon. I don’t think I would’ve been able to get the Post to have such a strong start without those two.
